Family Tree

Navigate through the Family Tree of the Royal Families of Europe

This is a representation of the family tree of the royal family of Europe. The visualization starts with Henry VIII, who was married to six different wives. You can then click on different people to follow the lineage. You can also search by name for any people in the overall map.

Multiple Components Work Together

This example combines a hierarchical display of the family with a Thinkmap Chronology that represents actual life spans. If you look in the lower left corner, you'll see a small representation of the section of the family tree that one is looking at. This picture-in-picture display can be useful when you have large amounts of data.

In addition, there are a number of sliders and other controls that can be useful. The age slider can be used to select a range of ages, which is particularly useful in the days when many of the royal family died at birth. These people appear in the graph, but are typically not of historical importance, so if you adjust this to "from 2 to 100," it's more interesting. There's a Depth slider, which allows you to select how many generations are portrayed, and also a selection box on the timeline which allows you to highlight people with particular birthdates.

Things to Try

  • Adjust the age slider so that you are only looking at people who are older than 2 years old.
  • Change the Depth Slider to 3, to see a larger group.
  • Click and drag in the Picture in Picture display to move the entire map.
  • Roll over a person and watch the corresponding life span in the chronology light up.
  • Drag the yellow box on the chronology, and watch the size of the icons in the map change.
