This is a simple presentation of the taxonomy of life. It contains over 2.1 million
taxa, from kingdoms (e.g. Animalia, Plantae) to individual species
(e.g. Skinax albicans, Euphorbia ziahnii) .
With Thinkmap, you navigate through this structure, and
in certain cases, you see images based on the taxonomic name. One advantage of this
structure is that a layman can quickly see visual similarities between organisms that have
phylogenetic relationships. Simply drag the mouse down the list of taxa in any one row, and
look at the images.
The Hierarchy Visualization
This Thinkmap uses a Hierarchical visualization to present the data. Each level of the hierarchy
is represented in one vertical row, with the rows lined up based on their depth from the root node.
In this way, a row of the hierarchy visualization is typically from a particulary rank of the
taxonomy.
Combines Two Different Data Source
Some of the data comes from a SQL database that represents specific
information about each taxonomic name and its relationship. This is combined with information
pulled from a Google-provided web service with images based on keywords.
Things to Try
- Roll the mouse over a node to see an image.
- Right or Apple-click on a node to see the source.
Source Data
The taxonomy of life comes from
Species 2000's Catalogue of Life's Annual Checklist.
Images are from
Google Images. Note: due to the fact
that we are only using the scientific name to choose images, some of the images
do not match the taxon exactly.
