Analyze and Drill Down Through 52 Years of the United States Budget

This is a representation of historical outlays by the federal government that allows you to compare and contrast any two years from 1963 - 2014 and to see which items have changed the most from year to year. All budgets after 2009 are projected. All amounts are in 2008 dollars and per capita for any given year.

This Thinkmap application uses a combination of the Hierarchy display with the ability to scale nodes based on any property. By default, the names of budget items that are smaller do not appear, unless a user rolls over the node. A user can also find specific items through typing in the search box, or through adjusting the percent increase filter.

Things To Try

  • Adjust either the blue or the yellow slider to compare different years.
  • Search for a budget item by typing in the search box. As you type, you'll see the graph change to indicate any words in your search that appear in text fields from the diagram.
  • Click on any of the departments to drill down to find more information.
  • Click the slider button on the Percent Increase range slider to turn it on, and adjust it to see various rates of increase or decrease.
